Whenever I tackle a big idea, embark on a totally new project or take on a completely different challenge I inevitably get to a point where I feel frustrated, overwhelmed and unsure I can get it done. Rather than give into those moments of fear and confusion, I write in my journal to process my thoughts and feelings. One of the best ways for me to re-gain my sense of commitment is to reconnect with my purpose.
Purpose is defined as: 1. the reason for which something exists or is done, made, used, etc. 2. an intended or desired result; end; aim; goal.
In our go, go, go society it is really easy to become so preoccupied with doing you lose sight of your greater purpose. When this happens, you may get caught up in doing work that in no way aligns with your deeper sense of purpose. If this disconnect goes unaddressed for long periods of time it can really complicate things and your like can feel incredibly unfulfilling.
When this happens, it is time to re-connect with your sense of purpose in life.
There is no right or wrong purpose. Defining your purpose is a very personal thing. No one can tell you what your purpose is. And I have found that my own understanding of my deeper purpose has evolved and changed over the years as I’ve gained clarity and new perspectives from life experiences.
Why am I doing this?
What do I hope to accomplish as a result of these efforts?
When do I feel most fulfilled?
What is the impact I want to have on the world?
How does this all align?
Go ahead, go to a blank page in your journal, write down these questions and then jot down your own reflections. You just may be pleasantly surprised as you feel a weight lifting off your shoulders and a lightness in your heart, for connecting with and honoring your sense of purpose can get you through anything!
