I have never been good at following directions. Maybe it’s because I had trouble learning how to read as a child. Or it could be my dislike of being told what to do. Admittedly, it’s ultimately a choice I make. I like to trouble shot, to look at a problem (or, say a high chair in need of assembling) and visualize how all the pieces will come together to create the end result I desire.
So, when I embarked on my entrepreneurial journey there was no way I would follow some get rich quick formula for “success” in business. It’s because I am a misfit entrepreneur. If you’re inspired yet feel like you’re struggling to find the best way to turn your vision into a reality, you might be a misfit entrepreneur too.
Here are 8 signs that you are a misfit entrepreneur!
1. You’re not good at following directions
When you purchase a new piece of furniture or equipment you might read over the assembly instructions, get frustrated, confused and ultimately figure it out on your own. If you’ve encountered this problem many times you’re likely to just give the instructions a cursory glance if you look at them at all before getting down to work.
2. You don’t like being told what to do
You can be slightly rebellious…or a lot rebellious. You don’t just jump because someone says so. You need to understand why you’re jumping, how it will help you with a clear and present problem, and what you can expect as a result. It is preferable that you make the decision to jump on your own accord.
3. There’s just something different about your business that’s hard to explain
You’re not opening a laundromat or some other business that’s fairly common and easy to understand. It’s hard to even create an elevator pitch because your business is a little complicated. When you do give a 30 second speal, some people quickly understand what you do but many people’s eyes glaze over with confusion…
4. What boxes?
You’re so hyper-aware of the interconnectivity of things that it’s hard for you to even see the boxes that everyone else is constrained by.
5. You act beyond the obvious
You take looking beyond the obvious one step further, your actions might surprise people (sometimes even yourself). Since you see the interconnectivity of things you’re poised to play in that space in-between where no one else is.
6. You want to earn an income making something meaningful
Starting a business isn’t just about making a profit for you. Sure, the money is nice and you’ve got some income goals in mind. But beyond that you want your business to have a positive impact on the community and even the world. This is because you’re aware of and driven by a deeper sense of purpose.
7. You challenge the status quo
“That’s the way it’s always been done” is not an acceptable explanation for you. You see how business as usual falls short of meeting the needs and challenges society faces today. You don’t want to perpetuate the bad just because that’s how business has been done in the past.
8. You’re willing to do something you’ve never done before
When other’s might cringe at trying something new you’re excited by the challenge. You know that being an entrepreneur requires you to be a jack of all trades, so you experiment with doing things you’ve never done before. And your business likely requires some expertise you don’t currently have but will develop in short order.
