Getting organized and focussed is a common challenge I hear from the leaders and entrepreneurs that I work with. I can tell you from personal experience that it is a process which requires dedication and diligent effort.
Having just gone through some major shit getting together efforts (checkout our new website), I am excited to share these three steps along with my own personal anecdotes:
The first step is Owning It
My latest effort to get my shit together has centered around leveling up my marketing, outreach, and community building efforts. Which required me to own the fact that my efforts have been haphazard, and inconsistent. Hence the sporadic and almost non-existent blogging you have read from me in the last year!
The second step is Leaning In
After acknowledging the problem and owning your role, the next step is to lean into it. For me this meant digging deeper into the issues at hand, seeking expert help, and maintaining an openness to change. After the initial excitement of possibility wears off, things start to feel overwhelming. For me that happened as I became more aware of the things I did not know and realized that the effort required to fix the problem was more substantial than I had anticipated.
The third step is Sticking With It
This is where many people get off the bus and self-sabotage. Things are not going to miraculously change over night. A well crafted strategy does not implement itself, trust me. It take continuous effort, day in and day out. Even if you only spend five or fifteen minutes advancing your long-term goals a day. You have to stick with these efforts.
Life will be happening around you, sickness will strike, home maintenance issues will arise at the least opportune time, and your best friend will need your support because she just lost her mother…you need to deal with all that and stick with it. Here’s the secret, the longer you stick with it the easier it is the weather these storms while moving the needle forward.
The Culminating Effect is….
So, there you have it. My three simple steps for Getting Your Shit Together! This is what I have been doing behind the scenes for the past 8 months. It is why I have not be as prolific at blogging as I would like. And it is why you will now be hearing from me a lot more…because now I am ready to release a draft of my book, A Misfit Entrepreneur’s Guide to Building a Business Your Way on this blog FREE. And while the book has a strong focus on entrepreneurship I will let you in on one more secret, it is also relevant for leaders in organizations that are doing business as UNusual and are ready for breakthrough growth.
